Parliamentary Procedure
PRINCIPLES UNDERLYING PARLIAMENTARY LAW
The rules of parliamentary law in Roberts Rules of Order are constructed upon
a careful balance of the rights of persons, subgroups, and an assembly’s
total membership. That is, these rules are based on the rights:
- of the majority, to rule
- of the minority, to be heard
- of individual members
- of absentees
- of all these together
The Assembly of Representatives held every fall is governed by parliamentary
procedure in Robert's Rules of Order. It is important to understand the basics
in order to participate with the FPTA Assembly. Lessons are given prior to Assembly
to educate first time Representatives with parliamentary procedure. If you are
a new Representative print out the documents below in PDF (adobe acrobat) format
and attend the short course at conference. Ask a FPTA chapter staff member at
conference regarding parliamentary procedure lessons.
Board of Director meetings also are governed by parliamentary procedure.
